The Graveside Service for Mr. John Wesley “JW” Mathis of Montezuma, Georgia will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 26E, Montezuma, Georgia. Mr. John Wesley “JW” Mathis, son of the late Mr. Fred and Mrs. Lula Mae Duncan Mathis, was born October 30, 1947 in Macon County, Georgia.  He was reared in a loving family in the Five Points community. At an early age, Mr. Mathis confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior and became a member of the Harrison Chapel Baptist Church.  When he returned to Montezuma after many years in the Atlanta area, he joined First Salem Baptist Church.  He later moved his membership to New Hope Baptist Church where he was active until his health failed.

Mr. Mathis attended the Flint River Farms School and later graduated from D.F. Douglass High School in the class of 1965. He received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree from Fort Valley State College in 1969.  While at Fort Valley State College, Mr. Mathis pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Upsilon Sigma Chapter. After graduating from college, Mr. Mathis began working for McLean Trucking Company, where he became a supervisor.  In April of 1975, Mr. Mathis enlisted in the United States Army, where he did a tour of duty in Germany.  He was honorably discharged in 1977.  He later became a federal Postal Clerk at the United States Postal Service.  He retired from the United States Postal Service in 2008 after over twenty years of faithful service.

On Tuesday morning, June 23, 2020 the Lord quietly whispered and he answered his heavenly Father.  Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his siblings: Mrs. Mary Frances West, Mrs. Bernice James, Mrs. Evelyn Washington, Mr. William Louis Mathis, Reverend Fred Mathis, Jr, Mr. Leroy Mathis Sr, Mr. Emmitt Mathis Sr., Mr. Walter Mathis, Mr. Chester Mathis and Mr. Gregory Mathis. 

Mr. Mathis leaves behind cherished memories with his six children: Mrs. Sherry Rocquemore (Ken) of McDonough, Georgia, Mr. Andre Mathis (DeAngeles) of Duluth, Georgia, Mr. Bahlial Grant of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Ryen Hooks (Clarence) of Fort Hood, Texas, Mr. Patrick Wilson of Conyers, Georgia, Mr. John Carlos Mathis of Stockbridge, Georgia and a bonus daughter, Ms. Christie Grant of Snellville, Georgia; siblings: Mrs. Earlene Gilbert of Sylvania, Ohio, Ms. Ethel Denson of Macon, Georgia, Mr. Clarence Mathis (Glenda) of Temple, Texas, Mr. Harold Mathis of Rochester, New York and Ms. Shirley Mathis of Killeen, Texas; five grandchildren: Mr. Zayvier Smith, Miss Brianna Rocquemore, Miss Serena Rocquemore all of McDonough, Georgia, Mr. Bahlial Grant, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio and Miss Peyton Mathis of Duluth, Georgia; a brother-in law, Mr. Leroy James, Sr of Montezuma, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Mathis of Florida; a host of other relatives and sorrowing friends.

Mrs. Eddie Ruth "Honey" Haugabook

The Graveside Service for Mrs. Eddie Ruth Haugabook of Montezuma, Georgia will be held Monday, June 22, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Brown Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 224, Montezuma, Georgia. Because of concerns over the COVID- 19 pandemic, CDC Guidelines  have limited the number of people that are allowed to attend services. Eddie Ruth Haugabook was affectionately known as “Honey,” a name given to her by her husband because of her sweet and gentle spirit, and “Ma Honey” to most of her community and everyone that knew and loved her. Her favorite words were “I love you and there’s nothing you can do about it…”

Eddie Ruth Haugabook was born on August 1, 1931 to the late Eddie Felder and Francis Freeman of Montezuma, Georgia. At an early age she joined Brown Chapel Baptist Church, where she was a choir member and deaconess. She was employed at Southern Frozen Foods for thirty-three years. She was married to the late Willie B. Haugabook and was preceded in death by her two sons Eric Haugabook and Willie H. Haugabook, her daughter-in-law Wilmotine Haugabook, and her grandson Roderick McKenzie.

She departed this earthly life for eternal life on June 18, 2020. Her loving memories will forever be cherished by her children: Minister Bettye Mathis of Ellenwood, GA, Freddie Haugabook of Atlanta, GA, Marianne Curry (Russell) of Stockbridge, GA, Carolyn Maloy (Abner) of Montezuma, GA, Clara McKenzie (DeVaughn) of Montezuma, GA, Doris Haugabook of Marshallville, GA and Jerome Haugabook of Atlanta, GA; twenty-two grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; a loving friend, Gracie Smith; her goddaughters: Mary Ray, Dorothy Kendrick and Marie Leary; loving cousins: John Felder, Freddie Felder, Willie (Pee Wee) Joiner, Christine Hardy and Fletcher Freeman; a host of other loving relatives and friends, including her loving neighbor, Rosetta Kendrick.

Mr. Jeffery Burnam

The Graveside Service for Mr. Jeffery Burnam of Montezuma, Georgia will be held on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Champ Waters Cemetery on Twin Churches Road, Montezuma, Georgia.

Jeffery Burnam was born on March 8, 1961 to Ethel Mae Cochran Burnam and Tommie McClendon. He graduated from D.F. Douglass High School in 1979. His passion was traveling and driving trucks. Jeff was a longtime truck driver. He was a generous person who was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He enjoyed watching sports. His favorite team was the Atlanta Falcons.

On Friday, June 12, 2020, Jeffery transitioned from labor to reward at Phoebe Sumter Hospital, Americus, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Sammie Lee Cochran and his son-in-law, Johnny Ellison, Sr.   

Left to celebrate his life and cherish his memories are his daughter, Lashundra Burnam Ellison; grandchildren: Johnny Ellison, Jr. and Pete Rumph III; his brother, Eugene Burnam; sister-in-law, Mary Hardison-Cochran; three nieces: Eglecia Cochran, Carla Parker and Titisha Masten; a host of other relatives and friends.

Ms. Willie Bell Sampson

A Graveside Service for Ms. Willie Bell Sampson of Americus, Georgia will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at the Eastview Cemetery in Americus, Georgia.

Because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines have limited the number of people that are allowed to attend services to 10 or less including ministers and funeral staff. Please practice social distancing and WEAR MASKS for your safety and the safety of others.

Ms. Willie Bell Sampson was born on June 15, 1945 in Sumter County, Georgia to the late Crema Dale Sampson Brown and the late George Meadows, Sr.  She was educated in the Sumter County School System.  Ms. Sampson passed peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2020 at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center. She was a lovely, sweet-spirited and devoted caretaker to her aunts Ola Bell Harris and Eula Mae Prince and others at Reynolds Home and Care. Her favorite motto was “Give people their flowers while they are amongst the living.”

At an early age, she joined Triedstone Baptist Church in Americus, Georgia, under the leadership of Rev. E.B. Clark where she served faithfully.  She later joined Scotts Mater CME Church under the leadership of Rev. D. Sheree Jacobs where she continued to be a faithful servant.  She enjoyed attending church and helping others. She was full of wit, wisdom and offered spiritual encouragement to many people. After many dedicated years of service, she retired as a caregiver and production worker.

She is predeceased in death by her aunts Ola Bell Harris and Ossie Coleman, her uncle David Sampson and her brother Johnny Meadows.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her only child, Jimmy Lee Clemons, Jr. of Americus, Georgia; four grandchildren: Jimmy Lee Clemons III of Atlanta, Georgia, Jamee Genella Denise Clemons, whom she named, Terence Jermaine Clemons and Lakeithia Nicole Myers all of Americus, Georgia; her brothers: Reuben Meadows and Jimmy Meadows  both of Cusseta, Georgia; her sisters: Leila Meadows of Cusseta, Georgia,  Sarah Turrentine of Columbus, Georgia and Ozeila C. Ferrel of Phenix City, Alabama; her aunt Eula Mae Prince of Americus, Georgia. She also leaves to mourn her  three great-grandchildren:  Darrius Clemons and Makayla and Somaria Robinson of Americus, Georgia; cousins: Mattie Reynolds, Ruth Ann Reynolds, Annie Reynolds, Sandra Reynolds and Joanne Sampson all of Americus, Georgia; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Margaret Jackson, Emma Kate Lowe, Kate Ward, Mae Lee, Betty Kitchens, Sarah (Poochie) Nelson, Tina and Barbara Law, Mr. Roach, Dorothy and Walter Bridges, Gail Pickett, Cathy Wilkerson and Daisy Washington.

Mr. Gregory Bernard Kendrick

Gregory Bernard Kendrick, 67, affectionately known as “Greg”, was born in Montezuma, Georgia to the late Louise Kendrick and Eddy Burke October 1, 1952. Greg attended Vienna High & Industrial School in Vienna, Georgia and studied finance at Shelby State Community College, Memphis, Tennessee.  He proudly joined the United States Marine Corps where he received training in Computers and Truck Driving. 

Greg accepted Christ at a young age and studied the bible with his grandmother. He knew and believed God’s Word and enjoyed the life that he lived sharing with many people. Greg was employed by several different companies but he loved driving trucks and traveling. Greg was a very giving person and, as the saying goes, he wanted to and liked to “keep it moving”. 

On June 10, 2020, Greg transitioned from labor to reward. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his step mother Ethel Burke and two brothers, Leroy Burke and Jeffrey Dino Burke.

Gregory leaves to cherish his precious memories six siblings, brothers: Ronald (Carlos) Herring of Montezuma, Georgia, Larry (Gazette) Burke, Darryl (Vickie) Burke, sisters: Ann Allison Bailey, Elaine (Samuel) Jones and Sylvia (Francois) Theodore all of Florida;  A Dear Caring & Dedicated Cousin, Valerie West, her sons & grandchildren; godson, Avery Stewart; The Patriarch of the Kendrick/West family, Cousin J.W. West all of Montezuma, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and very good friends

A Graveside Service for Mr. John C. Adams, Jr. Of Vienna, Georgia will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Dooly County, Georgia.

John Clarence Adams, Jr. affectionately known as “John C” was born on March 14, 1946 in Dooly County, Georgia to the late Alice Tinsley Adams and the late John C. Adams, Sr.      

“John C” enjoyed barbecuing and hanging out with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He departed this life on June 9, 2020 at the Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary F. Adams and a son Tony Adams.

His beautiful life will forever be cherished by his four daughters: Barbra Hardy of Warner Robins, Georgia, Mary Adams and Elizabeth Adams of Americus, Georgia and Valencia Jon’Vaney Hamilton of Cordele, Georgia; five sons: John Adams of Plains, Georgia, Oscar Freeman of Montezuma, Georgia, Willie C. Moore and Bobby Adams of Cordele, Georgia; five sisters: Ruthie Trice of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mae Nell Hardrick of Vienna, Georgia, Bernell Ross of Warner Robins, Georgia, Lucy Adams of Smyrna, Georgia and Betty Merrell of Vienna, Georgia; He is also survived by Roalie Adams, Alonzo Adams, James Adams, Jerome Adams and Michael Lango of Cordele, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and sorrowing friends

The Graveside Service for Emmitt C. Mathis, Jr. of Houston, Texas will be conducted Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, GA Hwy 26E, Montezuma, Georgia.

Emmitt C. Mathis, Jr. was born to the late Emmitt C. Mathis, Sr. and Mildred B. Mathis Carter on February 6, 1957 in Montezuma, Georgia. At an early age, he joined Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Emmitt was a 1976 graduate of Macon County High School. Emmitt enjoyed sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys. During his young adult years, he coached the Montezuma A’s and began working for the Macon County Meat Processing Company.

On July 13, 1979, Emmitt Mathis, Jr. married the love of his life, Wanda Faye Story. Their union was blessed with two beautiful children. In 1988, Emmitt and Wanda moved to Houston, Texas where he worked five years for Grocery Supply. He finished his career with twenty-one years of dedicated service at Dr. Pepper Bottling Company in Houston, Texas.

Emmitt departed this life on Sunday, June 7, 2020. He is preceded in death by both parents, Emmitt C. Mathis, Sr. and Mildred B. Mathis Carter, sister, Ynestra Lynn Russell, and brothers-in-law, James Williams, Wayne English, Jackie Story and Billy Story.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife of forty-one years, Wanda Faye Mathis; two children: Charmain Benard (Ronnie) of Grand Prairie, Texas and Marques Mathis (Tawanna) of Houston, Texas; two bonus children: Dwayne Harvey and Shannon Rivers (Taylor, Jalen and Jordan) of Houston, Texas; three sisters: Katreena Arnold (Clarence) of Chesterfield, Virginia, Rhonda Williams of Portsmouth, Virginia and Sharon English of Montezuma, Georgia; sisters-in law and brothers-in-law: Marshell Canady (Jeffrey), Richard Story (Gloria Jean), Walter Ben Story, Jr., James Green, Burnell Story and Pauline Story of Montezuma, Georgia and Sonny Sneed of Akron, Ohio; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, family and friends

The Graveside Service for Mr. Eddie Burnam of Montezuma, Georgia will be conducted on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 26E, Montezuma, Georgia. The family realizes COVID-19 has changed the fabric of how we comfort each other in times like these. They are asking that we, as much as possible, practice social-distancing due to Mrs. Laura B. Burnam and other family members that are medically fragile. Because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines have limited the number of people that are allowed to attend services to 10 or less including ministers and funeral staff. Please practice social distancing and WEAR MASKS for your safety and the safety of others.

Eddie Burnam was the youngest of five children born on October 1, 1937 to the late Barney and Pauline Turner-Burnam. He was born and reared in Montezuma, Georgia. He was educated in the public school system and was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church. 

Mr. Burnam worked for Maron Products Inc., for 17 years and later for Macon County Public Works until his retirement in 1995. He was married to his devoted and loving wife, Laura B. Burnam, for 60 years. Eddie enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends. He enjoyed fishing and watching his favorite team, the Atlanta Braves.  He touched the lives of so many people within his Montezuma community with his big personality, his entertaining jokes, jiving, laughter, and his smile. Mr. Eddie Burnam, after a historic stint of over 25 years as a Dialysis patient, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2020 at Navicent Health Center in Macon Georgia.

He will forever be remembered by his loving wife, Laura B. Burnam of Montezuma, Georgia; his sister, Mary Adams of Jacksonville, Florida; his children: Ervin Burnam (Audrianna), Patricia Burnam, Debra Burnam of Montezuma, Georgia, Juanita Burnam of Lithonia, Georgia, Terry Ball (Cassandra) of Memphis, Tennessee and Kevin Brown of Hanover, Maryland;  his treasured grandchildren: Curtis Caldwell, Van Duncan (Porche), CaDeezysha Burnam, Ashley Burnam, Jasmine Burnam, Ervin Kelly Burnam, Cheterria Ball, DaShanda Burnam, Dakota Burnam, Alaisa Sanders, Azaria Burnam, Ariyah Burnam;  four great-grandchildren: Jayvion Duncan, Braylon Duncan, Bryson Duncan, and Briaysia Germany; five sisters-in-law: Evelyn Ball of Atlanta, Georgia, Rosie Clarke (Nathaniel) of Perry, Georgia, Gladys Walls of Unadilla, Georgia, Thelma Journey of Montezuma, Georgia and Pauline Ravenall of Atlanta, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Willie Barnes (Ann) of Orlando, Florida; Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends will always cherish his memory.
