The Graveside Service for Mr. John Wesley “JW” Mathis of Montezuma, Georgia will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 26E, Montezuma, Georgia. Because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC Guidelines have limited the number of people that are allowed to attend services. Mr. John Wesley “JW” Mathis, son of the late Mr. Fred and Mrs. Lula Mae Duncan Mathis, was born October 30, 1947 in Macon County, Georgia. He was reared in a loving family in the Five Points community. At an early age, Mr. Mathis confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior and became a member of the Harrison Chapel Baptist Church. When he returned to Montezuma after many years in the Atlanta area, he joined First Salem Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to New Hope Baptist Church where he was active until his health failed.
Mr. Mathis attended the Flint River Farms School and later graduated from D.F. Douglass High School in the class of 1965. He received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree from Fort Valley State College in 1969. While at Fort Valley State College, Mr. Mathis pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Upsilon Sigma Chapter. After graduating from college, Mr. Mathis began working for McLean Trucking Company, where he became a supervisor. In April of 1975, Mr. Mathis enlisted in the United States Army, where he did a tour of duty in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1977. He later became a federal Postal Clerk at the United States Postal Service. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 2008 after over twenty years of faithful service.
On Tuesday morning, June 23, 2020 the Lord quietly whispered and he answered his heavenly Father. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his siblings: Mrs. Mary Frances West, Mrs. Bernice James, Mrs. Evelyn Washington, Mr. William Louis Mathis, Reverend Fred Mathis, Jr, Mr. Leroy Mathis Sr, Mr. Emmitt Mathis Sr., Mr. Walter Mathis, Mr. Chester Mathis and Mr. Gregory Mathis.
Mr. Mathis leaves behind cherished memories with his six children: Mrs. Sherry Rocquemore (Ken) of McDonough, Georgia, Mr. Andre Mathis (DeAngeles) of Duluth, Georgia, Mr. Bahlial Grant of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Ryen Hooks (Clarence) of Fort Hood, Texas, Mr. Patrick Wilson of Conyers, Georgia, Mr. John Carlos Mathis of Stockbridge, Georgia and a bonus daughter, Ms. Christie Grant of Snellville, Georgia; siblings: Mrs. Earlene Gilbert of Sylvania, Ohio, Ms. Ethel Denson of Macon, Georgia, Mr. Clarence Mathis (Glenda) of Temple, Texas, Mr. Harold Mathis of Rochester, New York and Ms. Shirley Mathis of Killeen, Texas; five grandchildren: Mr. Zayvier Smith, Miss Brianna Rocquemore, Miss Serena Rocquemore all of McDonough, Georgia, Mr. Bahlial Grant, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio and Miss Peyton Mathis of Duluth, Georgia; a brother-in law, Mr. Leroy James, Sr of Montezuma, Georgia; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Mathis of Florida; a host of other relatives and sorrowing friends.
