Funeral services for Colonel Charles Edward Cooke (Retired) will be held on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at the Andersonville National Cemetery.  wake will be held at Union Chapel in Huntsville, AL on Friday, August 7th at 12 pm. Charles passed onto glory peacefully in his sleep on the morning of August 2, 2015. He was 65 years old.

Charles Edward Cooke was born in Plains, Georgia on June 23, 1950. He was the seventh child born to Jack and Jonnie Mae Cooke. Charles confessed hope in Christ early in his life at Mt Salem Baptist Church in Americus, GA where he was baptized. He grew up in the church alongside his brothers and sisters dedicating his life to serving others. He faithfully served wherever life took him. Working tirelessly to become a faithful servant of Christ. He in later years could always be found telling anyone would listen how the Lord had blessed him and kept him

Family and friends remember Charles for his infectious smile, friendly nature, and love of sports. His younger sisters recall being forced to play basketball for hours with him, while his older brother recants Charles' intense work ethic. Those qualities endeared him to many over the years in both work and play from volunteer Boy Scout Leader to advancing through the Marine Corps ranks earning him the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal with Gold Star and the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Charles faithfully served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 31 years with duties in 9 states and 11 countries around the world. His distinguished service ended in 2004 in Washington, D.C. retiring at the rank of Colonel.

Following his military service Charles worked at Northrup Grumman as an Information Assurance Specialist. He was an ordained deacon at his previous church, First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, VA for 4 years before transferring with his company to Huntsville, AL. After 7 years, he retired to full time community service with such organizations as the Semper Fi Community Task Force and Meals on Wheels. He earned a Certificate of Biblical Studies from the Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Institute of Biblical Studies. Devoting himself more to the God of all Creation who sustained him throughout the years gave him great joy.

Charles is survived by his wife Wilma of 44 years, their daughter, Mary (Kerjhe Hite); six grandchildren Kenya Hurley, Keianna Bell-Cooke, Kia Hurley, Christopher Cooke, Kevin Hurley Jr, and Judah Hite; father-in-law, Willie Frank Wiley, Sr.; daughter-in-law Sophia Hurley;  his brother Oscar (Florence), sisters, Josie Simpson, Lula May, Carrie (Charles Randall, Shirlene (Franky Lane), Barbara (Glenn Otis); sister-in-law Jean Cooke; and brother-in-law Frank Wiley, Jr. Charles further leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends. The memories they have with Charles will forever be in their hearts.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jack Cooke; one sister, Annie Maude Cooke; three brothers, Sam, Alonzo, and Eddie Lee Cooke; and two sons, Kevin Hurley Sr, and Wiley Cooke.

The family wishes to thank you for your prayerful concerns and support during this trying time.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Diabetes Association / Vanderbilt, Nashville, TN in his name/honor.

Dear Family,

Please accept my sincerest condolences due to your most recent loss. May the God of all comfort continue to be with you during this most difficult time.

One thought that never fails to provide me with comfort during this most difficult time like this. Jesus says at John 5:28, 29 that: all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out...

To the Family,

   Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Charles (or Cookie) as we called him was an OCS classmate of mine.  We slogged through lots of mud and took a world of abuse together but we both made it through and went on to be Marine Officers!  Though after OCS our paths crossed only briefly, I know that he was a fine officer and a servant of his Lord.  The profession of arms will miss him.

Semper fi Cookie,

Diana and I were shocked to learn through the "Semper Fidelis" newsletter of Charlie's passing.  I truly enjoyed working with him at Marine Corps headquarters; he was a great Marine and a good friend.  Please know Wilma and family are in our prayers for comfort.  Semper Fidelis

Wilma and family, I am saddened by your loss. Please know that you have my heartfelt condolences. You all befriended me as I served an unaccompanied tour in Okinawa in 1985 and after all these years I fondly recall yours and his hospitality. The balance of my career reflected the example that Capt. Charles Cooke set for me. May God bless the Cooke family.

I just read in the Semper Fidelis news that Charles had passed away. I AM SO SORRY to read this. Charles and you were so fun as our neighbors in 29 Palms. He always had a smile on his face. Always an encouraging word to us. He found it so easy to laugh. I know he will be missed and is in the arms of the Lord. May the Lords comfort be with you and your family.   I know Charles will be missed.  Hugs to you and your family,  Sherri and kids

Dear Wilma and family, I just read that Charles passed. I don't know why the Lord brought you to my mind today. I recall our gracious visit with you in Hawaii with Dawn's parents, and then catching up with you both again when you lived in Woodbridge, and Charles personal encouragement to Dawn's brother in 29 Palms as Dawn's brother applied to the MSG program the first time. Dawn's brother just retired after 3 MSG tours. Time goes so quickly.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Peace to all. Ray and Dawn.
