Mrs. Alice Mae Engram Mathis, daughter of the late Moody and Ella Engram, was born October 11, 1913 in Montezuma, Georgia.  At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior and became a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church, Montezuma, Georgia. She graduated high school from Macon County Training School.

In 1932 she was united in holy matrimony to Mr. J.D. Mathis. This union was blessed with ten children. Her family moved to Fort Valley, Georgia in 1953 and she became a loyal member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she worked faithfully in Sunday School, the choir, and the Missionary Ministry where she served as president.

Mrs. Mathis was a true advocate in her community and the schools.  She served as president of the PTA, teachers assistant with the Head Start Program, kindergarten, nursery school, and worked with The Community Food Bank.  She was also a dormitory counselor at Fort Valley State University for many years.

Mrs. Mathis was the pillar of her family, always going over and beyond the call of duty to make sure her children and grandchildren received what they needed to be successful in life.  Her kind-hearted spirit and loving personality were displayed as she continuously helped others.

Mrs. Mathis was a member of the Reading and Savings Club in Fort Valley, GA.  She was a delegate for the Southern Baptist Association Convention and worked diligently for the Association for many, many years.  She lived a God-fearing life, was a community mom, and was loved by all.  Her house was the gathering point for the children in the neighborhood, where they played, ate and found love in her presence.

Mrs. Mathis departed this earthly life on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, Macon, Georgia.  Five of her children, J.D., Walter Ben, Carl, Edward Moody, and Melvyn preceded her in death.
