The Graveside Service for Mr. Samuel James "SJ" Thomas of Montezuma, Georgia will be conducted Friday, May 15, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Shade Arnold Baptist Church Cemetery, Highway 26 East, Montezuma, Georgia with Pastor George Porter, Jr. officiating. CDC Guidelines allow only 10 people including ministers and funeral staff to attend all services. Because of concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic, please practice social distancing and wear masks for your safety and the safety of others.
Mr. Samuel James Thomas, affectionately known as “SJ” was the son of the late Victoria McKenzie Thomas and Albert Thomas II. He was born on May 28, 1940 in Macon County, Georgia. SJ grew up in Montezuma and attended the public schools of the county. He attended the Historic D.F. Douglass High School, which opened in 1958 and was a member of the first graduating class, the Class of 1959.
He was introduced to Christ as a child and was baptized at Shade Arnold Baptist Church in Montezuma, Georgia. Mr. Thomas was a man of humility. He was a God fearing man and a faithful member of Shade Arnold Baptist Church. He was a dedicated employee of Robins Air Force Base and retired after forty-five years of service. Mr. Thomas was a resourceful man who provided for his family by being a hardworking farmer and the owner of Thomas Pest Control Company for many years.
On April 7, 1962, he married the love of his life, Annie Lee Hubbard. This union was blessed with four children, Terry, Vonda, Darlene and Bernette. He had a special love for his family. He was a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather. He was also a strong and gentle giant.
Samuel James Thomas heard the voice of Jesus and took his heavenly flight on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his brother Albert Thomas III and sister Eloise Thomas Hudson (Ernest).
Those left to carry on his legacy are his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Annie Lee Thomas of Montezuma, Georgia; his children: Terry and Veronica Thomas of Salisbury, North Carolina, Vonda and Joe Moore of Vinegrove, Kentucky, Darlene and Amos Whitehead and Bernette and Dexter McKenzie of Montezuma, Georgia; ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jet Hubbert (Barbara) of Columbus, Ohio, Linda Johnson of Warner Robins, Georgia, Thomas Hubbard of Ellaville, Georgia, Rosa Hubbard of Vienna, Georgia, Mary Louise Collier of Perry, Georgia, Vera Solomon, Myra H. Oliver, Hattie Hubbard and Betty Jo McKenzie of Montezuma, Georgia; aunt, Alena Burnam of Montezuma, Georgia; Godchildren: Johnnie Mae Tookes (Nathaniel) and Shannon Minger; God grandchildren: Johnnathian Tookes and Granada Ridley, Jr.; special nephews: Jonathan Hillman (Shay), Mark James (Porscha) and KC Cochran and family; a host of other loving relatives and friends.
