The Funeral Service for Ms. Thelma Collier will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 18, 2019 in the Chapel of West’s Mortuary in Americus, Georgia. Interment will follow in Daniel Grove Cemetery, Americus, Georgia.
Thelma Collier was born to the union of James and Ola Collier in Dougherty County, Georgia on August 31, 1940. Thelma was raised in New Jersey where she attended public school. After graduation, she attended Fort Valley State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education. After her college graduation, she relocated to Newark, NJ, where she taught school until retirement.
In 1998, she relocated to Americus, Georgia to care for her mother and Aunt Viola Dowdell. Those that knew Thelma knew that she was a private person who loved people. Thelma was a great pianist that travelled around the world showcasing her talent. She was a member of the NAACP, member of the Fort Valley State Alumni Chapter, and proud supporter of the US Marines Corps.
Precious memories will remain with her cousins: Juanita Combs of Detroit, MI, Joyce Judd and Roger Judd of Newark, NJ, Geneva Collier and Vincent Collier of Albany, GA and Beulah Carter of Americus, GA; her half-brother, Bobby Sutton of Newark, NJ; devoted friend and caretaker, Jessica Thomas-Floyd (Earnest Floyd) of Americus, GA, and a host of many friends including Robert West, Sybil Patterson, Marvin Harris, Frank Wiley, Beulah Jackson, and Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Ferguson.
