Mrs. Thelma Journey

The Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Thelma B. Journey of Montezuma, Georgia will be held Friday, August 11, 2023, at noon at New Hope Baptist Church, 8620 GA Hwy 26 E, Montezuma, Georgia. Interment will follow at the Andersonville National Cemetery, 496 Cemetery Road, Andersonville, Georgia.

Mrs. Thelma B. Journey transitioned peacefully in her home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 3, 2023. Thelma Brown was born on January 19, 1933, to the parentage of the late Abner Brown and the late Maggie Brown in Byromville, Dooly County, GA. She was the second oldest of eleven children. She grew up on the Family Farm the Five Points Community. On the farm along with her siblings, she helped raise livestock and farmed the family’s land. Her hard work on the family’s farm and family land was a demonstration of her love and dedication to her family. She later became an entrepreneur in the farm business along with her late husband in the Five Points Community. Thelma attended the Historic Flint River Farms School. Thelma and her younger sister, the late Gladys Brown Arnold helped lead the ladies High School Basketball Team to win the Georgia Class C State Championship during her Senior Year of High School.

After Thelma graduated from Flint River Farms School, she married the late Frank Journey, Sr. and settled in the Spaulding Community. Thelma served as a faithful, Christian member, servant, and Deaconess of Zion Gove Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E.L. Clark. She later moved her membership and served faithfully at the New Hope Baptist Church, for many dedicated years, under the leadership of Rev. Bobby Brown and Rev. Allen Waters. She served in many capacities until her health later declined.

Thelma was the exemplification of the Proverbs 31 woman; she professed her love for Christ and cared for her family. Thelma and her late husband made a significant impact in the Macon County community. They organized the first charted chapter of the local Macon County Branch of NAACP. They held meetings in their home each month, never missing the opportunity to listen and work with local citizens. In her spare time, she enjoyed caring for her flower garden, fishing, looking at soap operas/game shows, listening to gospel music and organizing her collection of antique jewelry. Her beloved family was her source of admiration.

Mrs. Journey was employed by the Macon County School System for many dedicated years. She served under the leadership of the late Principal, Coach Carl S. Peaster at Macon County High School.  After over 20 years of service to the students and staff, she officially retired with the State of Georgia. Many remember Mrs. Journey as a kind, caring and well-beloved mother figure. She taught valuable life lessons that guided countless students to success beyond the classroom. Her generosity and indefatigable dedication to students and colleagues serves as a testament of her faith and dedication to her beloved MCHS Family. Mrs. Journey was a proud #1 supporter of the Macon County High School Football Team. During her tenure, she was honored during a ceremony where she was presented with a commemorative MCHS Football Jersey by the late principal, Thomas Moore. Mrs. Journey was a die-hard MCHS Bulldog Fan. She never missed an opportunity to work in the Reserved Seating Section at all football games and any other capacity where she was needed.

 

Thelma was married to the late Frank Journey Sr. To this union three wonderful children were born. Her legacy of love and devotion will forever be cherished by her loving and devoted son Curtis Lynn Journey and his devoted wife Sona B. Journey, her devoted and loving son Frank Journey, Jr. and special friend Jackie Frederick, and her loving daughter Levonda Journey; a legacy of loving grandchildren: devoted granddaughter Tarshea F. Riley, Kaviest King, Caitlynn Journey, Pagen Bush, Devi Kendrick and Alexandria Byrom; her great-grandchildren: Christian N. Riley, Kayson and Kannon King; her loving great-great grandchildren: Bella, Christian Jr. and Jayceon; loving and devoted sisters-in-law: Ernestine Brown, Mary Ivrahim (Anyars), Leisa Williams (Joseph), Annie L. Brown and Gladys Moss; her loving and devoted siblings: Stanley Brown, Sr., Emmitt Brown, Sr. (Virginia), Lillian Lucile Johnson and Mary Alice “Ree” Jenkins; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, Macon County High School Retired Teachers and Staff also survive. Her loving and devoted siblings that preceded her in death: Dr. Earnest S. Brown, Helen Brown, Tom Martin Brown, Pauline Brown, and Gladys B. Arnold. A special thanks to her devoted caregivers, the staff of Promedica Hospice, Dr. Gerald Brantley, Virginia Brown and Chaplin Mayra Sierra.

Mr. Timothy Lee Walker

The Homegoing Service for Mr. Tim Walker will be held Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Marshallville, Georgia with Pastor Victor Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Champ Waters Cemetery.

Mr. Timothy Lee Walker of Montezuma, Georgia was born on May 25, 1954, to the late Mr. George Walker, Sr. and the late Mrs. Kadessa Harris Walker.  Tim, as he was affectionately called, was a 1974 graduate of D.F. Douglass High School in Montezuma, Georgia. On February 14, 2011, he was united in holy matrimony to Catherine Ellison. To this union, one child was born. Tim departed this life August 3, 2023, at Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his brother Edwin Walker, his sister Joan Paul, and his grandchild, Cadarius Porter.

He leaves precious memories to be cherished by his wife of twelve years, Catherine Walker of Marshallville, Georgia; his children: Camryn Walker of Marshallville, Georgia, Carlos Porter of Macon, Georgia, Timnesha Walker and Chauncey Walker both of Jacksonville, Florida; his bonus daughters: Jessica Lawson (Rod) and Angelica Skinner (Freddie) both of Warner Robins, Georgia and Crystal Skinner of Marshallville, Georgia; thirteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; his brothers: George Walker, Jr. (Shirley) of Montezuma, Georgia, Robert Louis Walker (Lavern) of Oglethorpe, Georgia, Michael Anthony Walker and John Thomas Walker (Sara) of Montezuma, Georgia; sisters: Gloria Jean Coleman of Clearwater, Florida, Oneida McDonald (Ernest) of Oglethorpe, Georgia and Carolyn Walker of Montezuma, Georgia; sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Colbert and Belinda Ellison both of Marshallville, Georgia and Wynell Walker of Oglethorpe, Georgia; five devoted friends: Marvin Latson, Dan Benny Clark, Lavern Perkins, William Felton, and Livester Williams; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Ester Joseph of Perry, Georgia passed away on July 26, 2023, at Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. Ester Joseph was born January 19, 1954, in Gary, Indiana to the late Less Joseph and the late Mary Law. He was a master carpenter and enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

Ester Joseph leaves precious memories with his children: Marcus Joseph and Cherale (Ahmad) Willis-Ford of Montezuma, Georgia.

The Graveside Service for Mr. Ester Joseph will be held Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at McDonald Cemetery in Oglethorpe, Georgia.

Mr. Geoffrey "Pee Wee" Larry

The Funeral Service for Mr. Geoffery Larry will be held Friday, August 4, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Norris Street, Montezuma, Georgia.  

Geoffrey Leland Larry, lovingly called Weezy and Pee-Wee, was born on February 1, 1960, to the former Mayor of Montezuma, Willie James Larry and the late Elizabeth Anne Thornton Larry. Geoffrey was a 1978 graduate of Macon County High School and was employed by Buckeye Cellulose Plant/ Procter and Gamble in Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was also employed as a truck driver and technician with Allen’s Canning in Montezuma, Georgia. Geoffrey was formerly married to Kimberly A. Larry, and three children were born from their union. Geoffrey was an amazing cook. He even taught his grandson Ja’Mauri how to cook. Geoffrey departed this life on July 26, 2023, at the Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his mother and bonus granddaughter India Collins.

Geoffrey leaves precious memories to be cherished by his loving and devoted life partner, Bernice Collier of Montezuma, Georgia; two sons: Geoffrey Larry II and Nicholas Larry; one daughter, Sharmillian Parker (Christopher Sr.) of Montezuma, Georgia; bonus daughter, Angela Collins (John) of Warner Robins, Georgia; eleven grandchildren: Taylor, Ja’Shaun, Ja’Mauri, Chris Jr., Khristian, Zayden, Geoffrey III, Jose’, Lauryn, Ayden, and Ava; bonus granddaughter, Carmen Collins; his father, Willie James Larry of Montezuma, Georgia; three brothers: Jay Larry of Parsippany, New Jersey, George Larry (Susan) of Rochester, New York, and Ronald Larry (Phyllis) of Warner Robins, Georgia; uncle, George Larry of Montezuma, Georgia; nephew, Keith Larry of Byron, Georgia; niece, Keishya Larry of Montezuma, Georgia; great-nephew, Timothy Davis of Warner Robins, Georgia; great-niece, Kyra Larry of Statesboro, Georgia; a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Geneva Ellamease Battle

Mrs. Geneva Ellamease Polite Battle of Americus, Georgia, was born February 4, 1928, in Ray City, Georgia. She attended elementary school in Ray City, Georgia and graduated from high school at Lowndes County Training School in 1945. She graduated from Fort Valley State College in 1949. Mrs. Battle touched the lives of many students as a public-school teacher for thirty-four years. Many of those years were spent in Sumter County at Northeast Elementary School. Mrs. Battle passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Battle will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Allen Chapel AME Church.

Geneva married Albert Battle Jr. in 1948. This union was blessed with three children.  Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Albert Battle III, Ellamease Battle Jones, and Theresa Battle Harris; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive visitors at the Battle residence at 203 Rucker Street on Monday, July 24, 2023 from 4 to 7 P.M.

Ms. Janie Marie Anderson

The Funeral Service for Ms. Janie Marie Whitfield Anderson of Warner Robins, Georgia will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 12 noon at Beulahland Bible Church, 2368 Gunn Road, Byron, Georgia. Interment will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, 8620 Highway 26 East, Montezuma, Georgia.

Janie Marie Anderson was the only daughter of the late Lester Whitfield, Sr. and Mary Frances Mathis Whitfield West.  She was born May 3, 1946, in Houston County, Georgia, and she received her education in the Houston County School System. She was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church (Henderson) at a young age.  Later she joined Beulahland Bible Church and attended faithfully until her health began to fail.

Marie, as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, touched the hearts of many.  She entered the Happy Hour Day Program in Warner Robins in the mid-90s receiving employment and social skills in the training centers. There she met new friends and called them “family”.

On Sunday, July 16, 2023, Marie transitioned from this life on earth to eternal life peacefully with her three brothers, her aunt Dorothy, cousin Gladys, and cousin Sandy at her side. Her former husband, Henry Anderson, preceded her in death.

Marie leaves precious memories to be cherished by her brothers: Lester Whitfield, Jr. (Mary), Elijah Whitfield (Shirley), and Jackie Whitfield (the late Carolyn); aunts: Ethel Denson, Earlene Mathis Gilbert, Shirley Mathis, Carolyn Whitfield, Charlie Mae Whitfield, and Dorothy Whitfield Patrick; uncles: Clarence Mathis (Glenda) and Harold Mathis; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Happy Hour family, and other sorrowing friends.

Mr. Ernest James Lundy, Jr. of Americus, Georgia passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at the Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia. The Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at United Holiness Church in Americus, Georgia

 

Mr. Ernest James Lundy, Jr. was born on March 31, 1969 in Plains, Georgia to Bishop Ernest James Lundy, Sr and Mrs. Mattie Lundy Colquitt. On June 16, 2006 he married Tammy P. Lundy. He was employed by RE Garrison.


Left to cherish his memories are his wife Tammy Lundy; his children: Valencia Williams, Michael Stewart wife Ashley Stewart, Kenyata Weston, Shaquille Myers and Adrianna Porter; his parents, Bishop Ernest James Lundy, Sr and Mrs. Mattie Lundy Colquitt; one sister, Amanda Michelle Paine; four brothers: Calvin Bernard Lundy, Christopher Sean Lundy, Prophet Darnell Lundy and Michael S. Lundy. Several other relatives and friends also survive.

The Memorial Service for Mr. Charles Jerome Leverette of Americus, Georgia will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. at St Mark Cemetery in Plains, Georgia with Rev. George F. Monts officiating.

Mr. Charles Jerome Leverette was born in Americus, Georgia on January 12, 1959, to the late Mr. Leeoner Boone and Mrs. Lucy Mae Leverette Miller (Samuel). Charles attended Americus High School where he was an excellent athlete, playing football and baseball. He also played travel baseball with Kroger in Atlanta, Georgia. Charles departed this life on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pruitt Health in Ashburn, Georgia. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister: Tommy (Pamela) Leverette, Leon Boone, and Ann Leverette.

Charles leaves precious memories to be cherished by his one and only son, Antonio K. Battle of Plains, Georgia; four devoted brothers: John Arthur Boone, Sr. (Barbara), Johnny Leverette, Sr. (Patricia Johnson), Samuel Miller, and Henry Miller all of Americus, Georgia; a host of loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his devoted friend, Gerald Whitehead.

Mrs. Eugenia West McRoy

The Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Eugenia West McRoy of Tallahassee, Florida will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 10:00 A.M. at New Hope Baptist Church, 8620 Georgia Hwy 26 E, Montezuma, Georgia with Pastor Allen Waters, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Eugenia West McRoy was born March 26, 1925, to the union of the late Liones West and Ellis Burnam West in the Five-Points area of Macon County, Georgia. At an early age, she confessed and dedicated her life to Christian belief, joining New Hope Baptist Church. She was among the many who were baptized in the Horse Head Creek. She began her formal school years at the New Hope Baptist Church rural school and graduated in 1943 from the Flint River Farms School. She taught school one year at the Rosenwald School in Houston County, Georgia. Eugenia spent the majority of her life working and raising her family in Jacksonville, Florida. She worked as a nurse’s aide before retiring.

Eugenia decided to return home to Montezuma, Georgia after decades away. Known affectionately as Tuggin, she was "at home" with dear cousins she grew up with and with her younger brother, Hubert, her Mama Kate, and nephew Buddy. She was welcomed home by her family church and enjoyed fellowshipping with relatives, childhood friends, and new acquaintances. Eugenia enjoyed visitors and being Mama to her children, Gramp to her grandchildren, great grands, and great-great-grands, as Auntie to her nieces and nephews, and Cuz to her cousins. Receiving mail was a passion of hers since childhood. She wrote to and counseled incarcerated youth from her Jacksonville community where she served as den mother for years. Eugenia later relocated to Tallahassee, Florida with her youngest son James and family. There she was well taken care of and enjoyed her grandsons and milling about the grounds. Eugenia departed this life on June 25, 2023. She was preceded in death by her children: Jacqueline D. Hall, Gwendolyn D. Tyson, Ulysses “Dickie” Dickson, Jr., Rosalin “Roz” Dickson; and grandson, Auston “AT” Wards, III.

Eugenia leaves to cherish her legacy and memories, her sons: Dr. Kenneth McRoy, Sr., Gregory K. (Ronnie) McRoy, Sr., and James E. (Diedre) McRoy, Sr.; grandchildren: Jeryl Tyson, Sr., Dr. Ronetta Wards, Tanya (James) Hall Smith, Gregory K. McRoy, Jr., Regina (Craig) Summerour, Dr. Cassandra (Leavy) Carter, Tamesha McRoy, Kenneth McRoy, Jr., Christopher McRoy, James McRoy, Jr., David McRoy, Joseph McRoy; brother, Hubert (Ernestine) West, Sr., 22 great grands,7 great-great grands, and a host of sorrowing nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mrs. Annie Mae Mack, age 98, of Ashby Street Americus, Georgia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center. Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia with Rev. George Frank Monts officiating.  

Mrs. Annie Mae Mack was born in Sumter County, Georgia on July 23, 1924, to the late Mrs. Leona Walton Bell and the late Mr. Lonnie Mack Bell.

Left to cherish her memories are her four daughters: Ozie (Henry) Wilbon, Rosa Sims, Mamie Riley and Geraldine (Rev. George) Solomon; Several other relatives and friends also survive.
